Language school Instituto Hemingway

My fifth time learning Spanish with Instituto Hemingway. I have so much fun while improving my language skills. Great organization, excellent teachers, fair prices. All over a great experience. Will be back next year:-)

The classes at Hemingway are fantastic but the activities and the people really made it feel like home for the three weeks that I studied there. There were so many ways to get involved with the culture in Bilbao and meet other students like visits to landmarks, a wine tasting and regular pintxos nights. The classes were super communal as well, so we all got to know each other and the teachers and staff were all kind and really helpful, able to provide what each individual student needed. All in all, I loved my 3 weeks at Hemingway, and the city was a very cool place to live while I was studying. I’d recommend studying here to anyone at all that wants to boost their level of Spanish and there are even classes for total beginners!

Fantastic week with Arkaitz in the A2 class. Small class size (5-6), really immersive with only Spanish spoken and most of the class as free flowing (and very interesting) discussion. It felt very natural so we gained a lot of confidence whilst learning the key grammar points, vocab etc. Couldn't recommend it highly enough!

This isn't just a school, but a unique community you want to be a part of. After-school activities and meetings engage students and staff alike. You'll enjoy spending time with people from all over the world eager to learn new things. You'll discover, taste, exchange opinions and perspectives—all while learning Spanish. The teachers are exceptional methodologists who know how to teach the language to foreigners. As a result, you learn more and feel more confident every day. I'm happy to have been a part of this wonderful Instituto Hemingway community.

I joined Hemingway for a week and it was better than I hoped for. It was my first experience speaking Spanish and our teacher made it easy to get up to speed. There are fun exercises, plenty of group exchanges and you get corrected privately and publicly without judgement. The break time is enough to get to the supermarket or go for a stroll around. The wine tasting activity was a fun one and helped me connect to more people. Even though it was a short stay, I would recommend everybody to consider going here for a nice learning experience into the Spanish language.

I had an amazing experience at Instituto Hemingway! I spent three weeks in June 2024 improving my Spanish and volunteering at an animal shelter, and it was truly unforgettable.

The Spanish classes were well-structured, engaging, and tailored to my level. The teachers were incredibly supportive, making learning both fun and effective. I felt my confidence in Spanish grow every day!

The volunteering experience was equally rewarding. Helping at the animal shelter allowed me to connect with locals, make a real impact, and experience the culture in a meaningful way.

Beyond the lessons and volunteering, Instituto Hemingway provided a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The team was always there to help, and I met amazing people from all over the world.

If you’re looking for an immersive Spanish-learning experience with the chance to give back, Instituto Hemingway is the perfect choice! I highly recommend it and would love to return one day.

I took classes at Hemingway for one week in October and two weeks in December 2024. As a language teacher myself, I was impressed with the quality and professionalism of the teachers. Despite the fact that new students come and go every Monday, the teachers assess the students' needs quickly and are able to adjust their lessons as needed. They have a repertoire of activities and games to keep things moving. I was less impressed by the housing options. I stayed one week in the student residence, and I rented an apartment from the school for the other two weeks; the student dorm was at MiCampus (near Txurdinaga metro stop, so you can see the reviews on other websites), the apartment they gave me was in a good location but it really needed an upgrade and freshening-up of linens/towels/dishes/cleaning for the price they charge. I heard from other students (of all ages) that the host family option was better. Overall, I imagine that in the "high season" booking accommodation through the school is a good idea and better value, but in the "low season" you can find something nicer on your own. Overall, the administration is very communicative and eager to help you figure out what works best for you. The best way to get in touch with them is via WhatsApp.

I sent my teenage son for an intensive 6-week course at Hemingway Institute. The school was exceptional! They taught him well and ensured an interesting and educational program tailored to his level. They also had evening activities that cemented his knowledge and friendships with the other students. My son had a ball and his Spanish went through the roof! I recommend this school 5/5.

Hemingway is a great place to meet new people of all ages and have a great time. The teachers and staff are super friendly and will help you boost your Spanish to a higher level. Activities are also arranged such as visiting the Guggenheim and various other museums. I would highly reccomend coming and doing a course here, you won’t regret it!

I cannot recommend more highly Instituto Hemingway to Spanish learners from around the world. I had an exceptional teacher Rafa who was somehow (magically) able to cater to all of the individual backgrounds of each student to advance our Spanish vocabulary, grammar, and knowledge of colloquial phrases and idioms. He solicited questions that we had from our own daily lives, such as from snippets of overheard conversations on the street, grammatical structures we encountered, and so on. He was able to teach on-the-fly about grammatical topics with a clear framework. He varied the structure of class so that we remained engaged -- we played games, studied grammar, read opinion articles, presented artwork, developed stances for debate, and so on. At the end of my experience, I took the SIELE exam with the institute, and José, the director, went out of his way to accommodate my timeline and exam despite it being a very busy time for them, as they were administering the DELE on the same day. During my next trip to Bilbao, I will most definitely take in-person courses with Instituto Hemingway again!

I am thrilled to share my experience about Hemingway institute. From the moment I enrolled, I was impressed by the professionalism and dedication of the staff.

The institute caters to various levels of proficiency. I enrolled in the intermediate Spanish course, and the curriculum was both challenging and engaging. The materials provided were comprehensive, and the lessons were well-structured.

The instructors are the highlight of the institute. My teacher was very encouraging, and adept at explaining complex grammatical concepts in a way that was easy to understand.

Overall it was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend to all.

As a host family working together with Instituto Heminway, we have really enjoyed every single stay we have had. We love having students in our house that enrich our daily lives, bring adventures and tons of learning also.

The school has amazing teachers, who are friendly, welcoming and passionate about their work to help their students.

The school itself is very central to Bilbao, right next to the old town and the river. There are always fun activities to do, I have been to the Guggenheim museum, had Spanish food and also been on a bike ride around the beautiful city with the other students. These opportunities were fantastic.

I was part of the volunteer program, I was accommodated in a room with other girls, everything went very well. The Spanish lessons are very friendly and allow you to progress quickly. The institute allowed me to have a very good stay in Bilbao.

I recommend this school to anyone who wants to improve their Spanish! They have excellent teachers like Rafa who really helped me prepare for my Cervantes exam.

I highly recommend Instituto Hemingway! The positive and inclusive atmosphere makes it genuinely fun to learn, totally non judgemental and very motivational. The teachers become firm friends, and adapt to students needs. The activities are also wonderful - getting to experience iconic Spanish and Bilbao culture. It's a fantastic base for exploring the Bilbao, meeting people, and really boosting your Spanish. I've made some amazing friends here, progressed my Spanish more then I ever expected and I can't wait to come back!

I stayed 5 weeks in total in Bilbao, studying spanish, working with the dogs at the animal shelter, and discovering the basque country. My teacher Javi was the best! I gained confidence when speaking in Spanish, (and in the class) as well as my vocabulary, conjugation, etc.. all improving lots. I met so many nice, fun and caring people from around the world, through those that studied or worked there and the activities they organised (which were so. much. fun). The appartment where I lived was fully equipped, and it was an easy 10 minute walk away from the institute, as well as close to the centre of Bilbao, Casco Viejo, the museum... The dogs at the animal shelter where I volunteered showed me so much love and cuteness, and it was also such a good opportunity to visit the town of Urduña. Best Spanish school in Bilbao. I had the pleasure of working in the school for a semester as part of my university year abroad and witnessed in first hand the passion everyone puts into their work: all the amazing teachers, the staff of the secretary, José and Alfredo. Everyone is always trying to accommodate the students’ needs with a smile. I have seen students improve their Spanish level very rapidly thanks to the lessons they had in the mornings. The school organises free leisure activities where the students get to socialise and make friendships. I had an amazing time working at Instituto Hemingway and couldn’t recommend it more!

Hemingway Bilbao is an excellent Language School. Very good teaching methods within a friendly atmosphere. The school offers individual classes or group classes. Highly recommended. Very high standard of language teaching and the methods are available to adapt to all level of requirements. Great service from a very good quality language Institute !

I had a wonderful experience at Instituto Hemingway. The instructors are knowledgeable, passionate about teaching, and make studying enjoyable. The small class sizes allowed for personalized attention, and the immersive environment helped me gain confidence in speaking Spanish. Started taking lessons here as was based in Bilbao. Fabulous teacher and an excellent learning environment. I was volunteering in a school at the time and I joined Hemingway because word was they are the best in Bilbao.

Sadly I had to leave my afternoon course early because I needed to get back to New Zealand. The team at Hemingway worked out great deal to reimburse me for the weeks I couldn’t make due to the emergency. Can highly recommend.

I spent a week in Bilbao, studying at the Instituto Hemingway. I had 4 hours of Spanish classes every weekday, with Dani, which I really enjoyed, and helped me to boost my Spanish! I also met lots of lovely people from across the world studying Spanish. The accommodation was good value, and a 10 min walk from the school. I enjoyed the social activities that the school organised, and liked having the afternoons free to explore the city. I would have stayed longer if I could have!

The staff is really warm-hearted, friendly and sincere. If you're starting to learn Spanish from 0, they directly teach you how to communicate with people straightforward.

The money you pay for the course is affordable, and also contains all the touristy activities you can do in and around Bilbao.

The city itself is very cute, beautifully designed and, has amazing views alongside classic-modern architecture touch.
