About the school

In the center of Lyon, where the cultural and festive life of the city takes place, lies language school Alpadia. In a beautiful and stately 19th-century building, located on Lyons 'peninsula' or 'Presqu'île' that lies between the rivers Rhône and Saône. The school, overlooking the Rhône, has spacious, light classrooms with high ceilings and a family kind of atmosphere. There are plants, beautiful parquet floors and many high windows and historic details such as ornate ceilings and a marble fireplace. In the study area there are public computers where students can study quietly after the lessons. Just a stone's throw away you will find the largest square in Lyon, where students from the city often meet in one of the many nearby cafés and restaurants. The most beautiful pedestrian zones in Lyon are 1 minute away from the school and there is a metro station and a bus stop within a five minute walk. Alpadia has several schools throughout France and offers high quality education, the lessons are accredited by Qualité FLE.

Lyon

Lyon is the third largest city in France and offers a wealth of seductive experiences. With more than 2000 years of history, the city has a special architectural heritage. Since 1998, over 500 hectares of the historic city center has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Furthermore, Lyon is known for its beautiful museums and elegant shops that give the city a distinct, refined atmosphere. The many students that live and study in the city have put the club and night scene on the map and adventurous food-lovers can be fulfilled in their wildest, gastronomic fantasies in this city. With many Michelin starred restaurants, famous chefs, unique bistros and typical Lyon bouchon restaurants, there is something for every food lover here. Do not forget to visit the 'Paul Bocuse Halles': a market with permanent stalls where famous chefs get their kitchen supplies.

I have been really impressed with the way in which Alpadia has corresponded with and treated their students during the second confinement. Their approach has been very flexible and they have been incredibly amenable to the needs of their students during what must be a very difficult time for the school. This kind of flexibility and genuine care for the welfare of students is rarely found in private language schools and Alpadia should be commended for this.

ALPADIA is a wonderful school to learn French. The teachers are absolutely amazing and the overall atmosphere is very supportive and conducive to learning a new language. Everyone goes out of their way to make you feel included. It’s like a big family !!

I definitely recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn French — especially beginners. It is located in a pretty building, is very clean, and has a vending machine with some snack essentials. I went to ALPADIA during COVID - 19 and the experience was still wonderful. Although I despised wearing masks in the hot weather, it did not tragically effect my learning.

Not to mention, Lyon is beautiful! There is so much good food surrounding you that it is impossible not to indulge a bit. Everything is pleasing to the eyes and the people are kind. My only recommendation is that you get an apartment close to the school. I did not mind my 20 minute walk at all, however some students lived so far away that it was a real hassle to get to school. I also suggest that if you are old enough you get an air b&b instead if staying at a host family. This way many
things are just simpler such as laundry, and you are guaranteed a clean room/ area. Although, my host family was very sweet, the room given to my sister and I was very small and pretty dirty. We also had some misunderstandings with the host family which resulted in tension within the household. To be honest, I do not regret staying with the host family because I think speaking with them improved my French, however I also adapt to situations very well. If you do not, I strongly suggest that you get your own apartment.

That being said, please come!! You won’t regret it.

Alpadia Lyon is like no other language school. Here, french is not simply taught, but experienced. No matter if your aspirations for learning french are purely for pleasure, for studies or professional, the school does its best to tailor your stay to meet those needs. During the year I spent at Alpadia, they even offered me an internship at the school to ensure that I could be exposed to the language in a diverse range of environments. If it hadn't been for the stellar teachers and staff who go out of their way to foster such a lively and welcoming atmosphere, there is no doubt I would not feel as confident with the french language as I do now!

Staff and teachers are awesome.
Classes are structured around your learning with ongoing assessment and feedback. Not a cheap place to study, but the quality of teaching and administrative support shows why - they were fantastic.

The teachers ran the evening activities themselves which was great because they also facilitated your learning, they asked what level you were and could adapt easily. Despite going at a quieter time in the year, there were plenty of other students to meet and become friends with, so you didn't feel alone.

Accommodation was good, but 30 mins irrespective of walking or taking public transport. Heater in my apartment wasn't working (in the middle of January) so I was sleeping in thermal clothes as well as sweats as it was freezing and I was only given a thin duvet and no blanket.
Would've been great to have more activities to do, but that was dependant on students wanting to participate so understandably didn't get as many.
So much love for Alpadia. I will be back!!

I really enjoyed how much the teachers cared about the students and saw my French improve by two levels in my four months at the school.
