About the school

In the Salamanca district, in the center of Madrid, you will find the growing school AIL. The school is on the first floor of a modern building in a busy street in the luxury district of Goya - named after the Spanish master painter Francisco de Goya, whose works are often found in Spanish museums. Around the corner you will find the Retiro park, one of the largest parks in Madrid, which lends itself perfectly to escaping the hustle and bustle of the city center. In the school itself there is a Chill Out Room with lounge sofas where you can relax, learn and study between classes. Every teacher at the school has Spanish as their mother tongue, so they teach with ease and without any accent. The school attaches great value to the structure and quality of the lessons, which are therefore always well prepared and interactive.

You definitely shouldn't commit yourself to more than one week in advance.

The positives are that the teaching is pretty decent. This really depends on the teacher you get, though - some teachers are just more effective than others. You have some teachers who can be creative about the way the course is taught, and then you have others who follow the book without deviating from it at all.

The negatives are first of all that the administration is a pain to deal with. I was placed in a class that was too low for my level. When I asked to transfer up, the school refused to do so for two weeks due to the fact that they had nothing available at a higher level, which meant that I was rehashing old material without learning anything new.

I asked for a partial refund, if they weren't going to move me up to a higher level, and they just refused completely, so I was just stuck in this lower and more tedious level, not really learning or improving.

There are definitely cheaper and better schools out there in Madrid. I wouldn't recommend this school at all, were it not for the fact that they have some pretty good teachers there. Otherwise - avoid at all costs.

Have you ever thought of slowing down the pace of your travel by enrolling in a foreign language course? Picking up nuances of a new language during your travelling days? I recently did that, enrolled myself in this Spanish language teaching school in Madrid, to add to the already slow pace of my journeys across the Iberian Peninsula. The slowness of travel allowed me to let the unfamiliar sounds of a new language enter my mindscape. The teachers at the school made it lot easier. What made the whole decision of choosing the school is its superb location. AIL is in the most fashionable and interesting district of the capital - Salamanca.
I had another advantage of being assigned to the most diverse class I have ever been to! Just imagine learning a foreign language with students from as far as Shanghai, Seattle, Moscow, Paris and London! I felt like a world citizen in the classroom representing my country of origin - India.
The school arranges students' accomodation, helps in smooth processing of student visa and teaches a language which is not just widely spoken in many parts of the world but is also official language in 21 countries!
Hopefully, I will be returning to the school in this summer to do advance course. The beginner level classes I attended have led to another development, I am looking for next level course in my current city of residence in India. Thank you @AIL Madrid for giving me the confidence to learn a new language. My travel in Spain got a whole new meaning this time and I have hence returned to base with many stories revolving around español.

This school suffers from the same problem I guess as a lot of private language schools in Europe seem to suffer from.
They run it more like a business than an actual school. There's a very "factory feel" to the whole thing. Customer service works well until you have an actual problem, after which the attitude seems to be "well, we already have your money, so I guess that's that."
They're not really great at finding your proper level, and the activities they offer feel like an afterthought, sort of like ordering lobster at an American diner I guess you could say. It's just something more to put on the pamphlet for advertising.
Didn't find housing through them, so I guess I can't comment on that. Friends at the school, however, seem pretty dissatisfied finding an apartment through the school. I guess it seems it is better to find one on your own.
All in all a thoroughly disheartening experience.

Undoubtedly some of kindest and most helpful staff I ever met. The teachers here are passionate, patient and very committed to teaching Spanish. The price for classes here is extremely reasonable (I learned A LOT in just a few weeks) and worth every euro. I will surely come back and learn when I have time.

I have just finished studying for 4 months in AIL Madrid and will be back for another two weeks in April. I would thoroughly recommend this school - The location is excellent and easy to get to and the quality of the classrooms is great too. I had several teachers and would recommend them all for being professional, fun and innovative in some of their learning activities (and also for being willing to help outside the classes via social media). I also want to say that the support staff are excellent too as they are all approachable and extremely helpful!

What I also loved about the school was that they organised activities each day and a fiesta on Fridays - This was a great chance to meet other students, teachers and to get to know Madrid (which I love). This is especially good if you are in Madrid for a short period of time.

I also booked my accommodation through AIL and I thought it a fair price, although others seem to think it was a tad expensive. I guess it depends on what you get and where you are used to living, but I got a nice big room in a reasonably sized flat and will be asking for the same room/place again.

All in all I had an amazing time in Madrid and with AIL. So much so that I would definitely think about moving to Madrid permanently! I would definitely recommend going to AIL and there is no higher proof of this than me saying that I am going back!

¡Hasta pronto AIL y Madrid!
