Biggest mistake I have made in trying to learn French was to enroll at Eurocentres, Paris. While there are some very good teachers there, very kind, very "sympa", they allow classes to get up to 14 people (way too many to learn anything). They assess you on Day 1 to determine your CEFR level of French and then place you in a class with others at the same or near that level...makes total sense. Then they follow the basic objectives for each level determined by the CEFR...that also makes total sense. The teachers teach only in French with the idea that they are "immersing" you in the language. All except one (a fine teacher named Jean-Daniel who understands the students are learning French and need a teacher who enunciates clearly and speaks at a moderate pace) chatter away in French and if you can follow it, great. If not, not great. Because understanding spoken French is the most difficult part of learning the language it would be SO helpful if they would make that easier for the students. Speak more slowly (but not unduly so) and speak VERY clearly. As students learn more, the speed can increase a little but it is always best to keep the pace moderate and the enunciation really, really clear. That is not what happens here IN MY EXPERIENCE. For some, going to a language school and learning with people who are supposed to be at your same level and might number up to 14 in a class might be a great idea. For me it was awful. I hated it. I found myself looking at my cellphone in classes to see what time it was and how long I had to endure before the next break or the end of the class. That is NOT a sign of a happy student learning a language in a favorable environment. I signed up for a four week intensive course and left after week 2 with no refund available. I didn't care...I wanted out. I give Eurocentres two stars to credit them for some good teachers who are good people. I give myself one star for not making a good decision about going there. I get five stars for choosing to leave and find a private teacher in Paris for the last two weeks of what would have been my "intensive 4 week course". I made a really bad choice going there...it was not for me. I would have done much better with a true immersive experience staying with a teacher and his/her family and getting private lessons each day. Be careful about language schools that say they are #1 in Paris or elsewhere as Eurocentres does. If you are older than the class average age of about 23 (at least in my class) and/or if you don't want to be put through a "petite fabrique de langues" (a little language factory) with up to 14 other students in the same class, all getting the same stuff even if you have other needs, think about doing something other than a language school like Eurocentres. Invest your valuable time, energy, and money wisely!! |
