I took my first language course in Montpellier this September and I had a good time. The town is very nice, with friendly people and a well walkable inner city. The course itself is a nice experience, the staff is friendly and the contents are well-tailored to individual competence levels.

I can highly recommend this language school! Very professional, very well organised, the staff is always very helpful and friendly! The teachers are highly motivated and even share insights of the country's culture and politics! In only one week, I've learned so much and completely lost my fear of speaking. I did one week of classes at ILA in August 2025, and I wish I could have stayed longer! The school is absolutely incredible and my French improved so much in a short amount of time. Everything is completely in French (although the staff can speak English if you need it) and being in an immersive environment really helped me with listening comprehension and speaking. I'm American, and I loved meeting people from all over the world in my classes. Additionally, the teachers are very patient and knowledgeable. I was especially impressed that my teacher, Manon, knew the common mistakes that English, Spanish, and/or German native speakers make in French and was able to explain those to us. Also, after each day of classes, the school organized various activities that continued our French immersion and allowed us to meet more people. Highly recommend!

ILA in Montpellier is an excellent place to improve your French. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming, and the teachers are top-class.
I went for 2 weeks last year (2024) and got so much out of it that I have gone again this summer, and my experience is the same.
I am taking a standard C1 level course each morning, in a class of 9. It has a strong grammar element, which is extremely useful, and taught in a well-structured manner. Each afternoon I am doing one-to-one listening comprehension practice with a charming lady, and the progress made there is phenomenal.
All in all, I heartedly recommend ILA. And it's in lovely Montpellier. What's not to like?

Last year, I had the pleasure of attending ILA in Montpellier, and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to return for a second year as well:) It’s a fantastic school with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff and students. ILA offers a variety of activities beyond the classroom, including a free city tour every Monday for new students, led by one of the teachers—a great way to get to know Montpellier from the start. The city itself is beautiful and lively, making the whole experience even better. I would 10/10 recommend it to anyone looking to study French in a fun and interactive way while also discovering and learning not just the French culture but also all other kinds of cultures through various students visiting from all over the world!

I just had my first class today at ILA my language institute in France, and I’m already so glad I came back! The teachers are incredibly responsive, the staff is warm and welcoming, and the classes are engaging and well-structured. The classrooms are clean, well-lit, and comfortably cool—perfect for summer learning. After a wonderful experience last year, I knew I had to return, and I’m excited for another great summer here!

I had the best time at ILA. I stayed for 6 weeks and undertook the standard + cooking course. From day 1, everyone was so welcoming, and it’s evident the teachers genuinely care about your progress. There are also many activities and tours offered by the school, and I highly recommend you take all the experiences offered as I went to come amazing places such as Camargue and Marseille. The cooking course was also great fun, and I got to experience French culture, and speak French whilst cooking. The Observatoire accommodation was also perfect, really good location and excellent facilities. Overall, I couldn’t recommend ILA highly enough!

Great school to learn French in France. Excellent teachers and materials. Great atmosphere. I can see a huge progress after two weeks of studying there. And the price is excellent as well.

I had a wonderful experience at this language school. From the very beginning, the staff was welcoming, professional, and truly dedicated to helping students succeed. The teachers are passionate, patient, and skilled at creating a supportive learning environment.

I found ILA through a google search, and after comparing it with other options, decided it was best for me. After spending four weeks at the school, I am so glad I did.

I undertook the A1 course and completed a homestay (highly recommend), and learnt so much more than I thought I would during that time. My teacher Julien was fantastic and made going to class something to look forward to every day.

The school was well organised, supportive, and was worth every cent. I am so glad that I took the leap to study in Montpellier at ILA.

I enrolled for the two-week 50+ program for seniors, and I'm delighted with the school and the experience in every way. In the mornings, seven other students and I had classes with Angélique, who's an exceptionally gifted teacher. We learned a lot and became good friends as we practiced conversation. In the afternoons or evenings, we joined all the 50+ participants (around 50 total) for cultural or social events, including visits to other towns in the region. The events were well-organized, and we had a lot of fun practicing French together. I selected the Premium Apart'hôtel housing option, and that was a good choice. It's a short walk from the school, and I liked having the little kitchen to cook a few traditional French meals. I hope it may be possible to return to ILA sometime in the future.

I absolutely loved my time at ILA! Originally I planned on staying for 2 weeks but without any trouble I was able to extend my stay at the school. My class consisted of 6 people from all over the world: Norway, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico and the Netherlands. It can be a bit nerve-racking to learn a new language but the learning environment felt personal and safe. My teacher was enthusiastic, funny and with her positive energy she kept the class engaged.

I fell in love with Montpellier, made a lot of international friends and improved my French. I will definitely come back sometime! 💜

The experience I had with the ILA institut was incredible. The school is well located, very organized and the professors are very well prepared and kind. The homestay was fantastic. I recommend this school for everyone who wants to learn French.

Wonderful French school, I've experienced 3 different teachers over my time here and they are excellent. I actually live in Montpellier with my husband so I need to learn French and so between my work commitments I am able to book a week here and there to enhance my french language. They are so flexible its great. It is super easy to book online or on the phone or even you can extend your stay at the reception in the school as I have done today. The structure, the lesson plans and the quality of each teacher presents you is with alot of great quality. I've learnt so much and in a fun, engaging way too. I did general & intensive course (October 2023-March 2024, started from zero French).

I’ve been hopping countries, tried different language schools for different languages… I would say without a single doubt that ILA is the BEST one I’ve ever been. I had my own accommodation so my review is purely for learning materials, teachers, staff.

LEARNING MATERIALS
Very organised, structured, systematic, interactive, interesting! We had escape room & out of classroom games, online games & quizzes, museum/gallery/exhibition visits, movie watching etc. For someone who gets bored easily, this definitely helps with keeping my interest in studying. No language school I’ve been did this much of non-conventional learning activities.

NO BOOK is one of the best things about this course. My learning materials could be downloaded online. I need nothing but my iPad. I’ve had enough of packing & carrying heavy language books back & forth, in & out Indonesia for years. Not this time! It’s environmental friendly, it’s insanely practical.

I love how they try to cover broad subjects: simple things like Halloween & Christmas, issues like equality, human rights, environment, politics…to something very real no language school I’ve been ever talked about it: during Valentine’s week vocab learning regarding to dating, love, romance, partnerships, human interactions in this context etc.

TEACHERS
I absolutely ADORE & LOVE my teachers! Each of them are very competent, knowledgeable, passionate, patient, try their best to teach. It’s not easy to deal with different students from different countries different personalities, especially younger ones who sometimes can show no respect/effort to learn.

They’re very KIND & ATTENTIVE. One teacher gave me her jacket because I was too cold & sat under the window. One shared her medicine to sick student. One bought pastries for the entire class. One gave handwritten postcard when she finished her teaching period. One would handwrite correct sentences customised for each student. One asked (outside the classroom- carefully & in respectful manner) how was my doctor appointment & if I was alright (dark times for me..I appreciate when someone give me words of encouragement). One gave me list of creative centre I can apply for art residency. They remember their students, even little details I thought they wouldn’t. Love how they can be personal without crossing boundaries & privacy.

Oh! Absolutely loved their local recommendations on what to do, where to eat & drink in Montpellier. Definitely ask them this!

RECEPTIONIST & STAFF
I mostly interacted with Alvin, Olivier, Céline via e-mail or in person. They took care my administrative stuff, fee, questions about the school in general. They’re the most HELPFUL, SMILEY, FRIENDLY team of administration. They always tried their best to help me with an issue. Even when I had troubles with other students & wish to change group, they tried to accommodate me (changing group/class is possible but not guaranteed, depending on availability).

LAST DAY
Olivier even helped me with something quite random. So I wanted to give teachers (including those who didn’t teach me) & staff a little snack on my last day of school, to show my gratitude. The day before I came up to Olivier to ask his help: how many teachers & staff would be present tomorrow, if he could help me arranging its distribution etc.

In the morning on my way to last day of school, I picked up 35 croissant & pain au chocolat I ordered the day before. I gave it to Olivier who helped me keeping it in staff kitchen. He said he would send e-mail to everyone telling them there’s some nibbles there. I feel bad because it might not be enough for everyone but sadly my student budget wouldn’t allow me to buy more..

Some of my previous teachers didn’t teach me anymore then, so I especially looked for them on that day to say goodbye (found out about their schedule, which building & classroom they’re in thanks to Olivier). I didn’t plan it at all, but I cried lol.

What a journey with ILA. Thank you so much for everything!!

I spent a month at ILA this summer and absolutely loved it. The school has a very nice atmosphere and my teacher was awesome. It's a great place to learn French and to meet new friends at the same time. Montpellier is a wonderful city. I couldn't recommend it more!

Spent 4 weeks there last summer. Great school, very structured classes, great teachers, lots of fun.

In fact, it was so great that I returned this year. (Although I had time for only 1 week this year, it was still totally worth it!)

I spent 12 weeks at ILA and surely they were one of the best learning experiences for me. When I arrived at ILA, my level was around B1 and when I left, I was at C1 level and even passed my DELF B2 exam post my stay at ILA. All the teachers are extremely helpful and skilled at teaching and making the classes fun and enjoyable for everyone. The class composition is also quite diverse in terms of nationalities, age groups, backgrounds, which makes the stay even more wholesome. I improved my French langauge skills exponentially during the 2.5-3 months and I will surely return in future. 100% Recommended for anyone who wants to get a full immersive experience of the French culture and language!

I spent just a week at ILA Montpellier in July this year and I would go back in a heart beat. My teacher, Roxanne, was excellent. The lessons were informative but great fun. As a mature learner I was placed with a group of mixed ages which really suited me. That was actually one of the things that I most enjoyed- spending time with people of different ages, from different countries that I never would have met in the course of my normal everyday life. My only regret was that I wasn't there for longer. As I was attending with my daughter we tended to go out in the afternoons to see the sights, but if I went again I would probably go on my own and either go to the many group excursions or do some revision in the library there. I stayed with a French family for the week. In all honesty it was not like the video on the website which suggests you will be staying in very luxurious accommodation! But in reality it was basic accommodation, in a great location with a really lovely host and we got on well. Being able to discuss the French election in real time, with a person who the possible results would impact on was invaluable to not only to improving my French but understanding about French life. And I got to swim in an Olympic sized swimming pool which was 3 minutes up the road from the apartment.

What a great experience! My month at ILA was likely one of the best months of my life. I made great friends, and improved greatly in my French through total immersion.

I loved my stay at ILA, it was both educational and a lot of fun. It's something I will remember for life. Also, the staff was always helpful and friendly, so I can definitely recommend.

Dear Future applicants at ILA,

From May until August 2021, I stayed with a French family while I participated in the ILA intensive program from B1 to C1. In C1 I also participated in the DALF preparation course. With the excellent teaching and extra-cultural activities at ILA, I was able to improve my French significantly. I noticed a significant improvement in preparing for the DALF. Moving from level to level I profited from the variety of teachers, teaching methods, and interactions with my host family.

While participating in the program I profited from 10 different teachers. I was online for the first 6 weeks (B1) which was effective as well thanks to Julia and Audrey! I learned valuable skills from each of the teachers I had from B1 to C1. I especially enjoyed having Cyprien for B2. The class sizes are small and so you get a lot more 1 on 1 time with teachers.

One of the most important things was staying in a fully French environment. I strongly recommend staying with a family. Whenever I or other students had an issue with their host family Alisson was able to navigate the situation with great professionalism.

After attending French programs in various parts of Canada, my home country, ILA's program is far superior! It remains to be the best investment I have made in my French journey!

Love this school! The staff and professors are welcoming, kind, and attentive and you feel like you are part of a large family. I've been to at least five different French language schools in my career as a Military Foreign Area Officer and this school is by far the best. I did a private course and both teachers listened to my requests to focus on oral comprehension and the course was superb. So much so that I tested two levels higher when I returned home. I highly recommend this school to anyone who is looking for personalised instruction. You won't be disappointed.

I recently ended a three week stay and was very happy with ILA and with Montpellier. I went all out and did the 20+10 with 5 private lessons per week (45 minute increments, so total time was 26 hours 15 minutes per week, if my math is correct). It was a lot but doable and I still had a good amount of free time to enjoy the city. The main class began at 9 am and was taught by Julien. He's a great teacher - kind, attentive to detail, prepared and knowledgable. The intensive course was Tue - Th afternoon, taught by Marie. It was mostly guided conversation, with a flexible syllabus and the focus was on oral production and comprehension. Marie let us make errors without slowing the flow of conversation with constant correction. She was also kind, organized and knowledgable. Private lessons were either before or after the main class. Marine and Peggy taught those, and they were flexible, allowing me to guide what was done at each lesson. The school offered/organized some events to help complement classroom learning, e.g. a language exchange Thursday evenings.

Montpellier is a great destination to study French. If English is your primary language, you'll be pleased to know (I hope) that English is not widely well-spoken, so if you are tenacious, you'll be able to avoid speaking English in your daily life there.

I was a little worried about being an adult student there. While the average age is much younger than I am, it really didn't seem to matter much. If this is something you’re concerned about, don’t let it be.

My housing wasn’t through ILA so I won’t comment on that here.

Overall, I recommend the school wholeheartedly,. I made a lot of progress during my time there. I loved the city. I would research housing thoroughly. Don't worry if you're an adult student, it will be fine. If you really want to learn French well and want a break from online learning, I think this is the place!

Good school, qualified teachers, good classroom-sizes. That is the reason why I have been at ILA a number of times now. With one recent downside: Because of the new "paperless policy" the school's teachers are encouraged to not hand out printed material, even to those students that find it easier to learn from paper instead learning from screens.

After spending 6 weeks at ILA in 2021, I decided to return for 2022 for an additional 10 weeks. I am in the process of completing a master's degree in French/English translation, and ILA offers me the opportunity to improve my skills rapidly. I will be returning one more time in 2023 for an additional 10 weeks in preparation for the DALF C2 exam, before beginning my doctoral work here in France. I would highly recommend ILA to anyone at any level. The school is well-organized and the instructors are fantastic. Thank you!

I have attended the online hybrid-course at Level A2 for three weeks and I have to say it was absolutely worth the time and money. I was mostly self-taught before I attended this course and was seeking to get confident in speaking and listening skills in French. Although I was online my teachers did an amazing job, including me and the other zoom students in all exercises and the motivating atmosphere in the class room had a positive effect on me as well. The exercises were fun, but progress oriented, I was never bored nor overwhelmed, and I learned a lot about France, as well as the countries my classmates were from

I took a short one week course to enhance my French and it was well worth the time at ILA! Really wonderful teachers, attentive staff and pleasant atmosphere to learn French, highly recommend! Also very sociable with weekly events that made it easier to meet new people and get to know Montpellier
