As one of world's best-preserved medieval cities Siena is a feast for the senses and an essential stop on every Tuscan itinerary. In the lively, medieval streets you will find sweet-smelling patisseries, tempting restaurants with the freshest Tuscan specialties and craft shops. The historic districts that the city is rich of are so well preserved that you imagine yourself in the 17th century when you walk through them. Siena is like an open-air museum of Gothic architecture and art. The small town has about 50,000 inhabitants and is built on three hills and surrounded by well-preserved city walls. You will find the world's most unique squares here, Piazza del Campo for example, a shell shaped square including scalloped edges. The world-famous horse race 'the Palio of Siena' which takes place twice a year is characteristic of the Sienese identity, history and culture and attracts visitors from all over the world. If you are following a language course in Siena, it is highly recommended to stick around a little longer when your course is finished. Siena is an excellent starting point to discover the rest of Tuscany. Think of visiting nearby charming cities such as San Gimignano and Pienza and some Tuscan wine regions such as Montalcino and Montepulciano.
