On a clear day you can pick out the African coast from the shore at Tarifa, and the wind sweeping across the Strait keeps reminding you where you are. This is a small walled seaside town at Spain's southern tip, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and it suits students who want Spanish lessons in the morning and the sea in the afternoon. After class you can head for long sandy beaches, the narrow streets of the old town or the protected hills and dunes nearby.

## What students say about Tarifa

Students who have studied in Tarifa write warmly about the beaches, which they describe as gorgeous and close enough to reach on foot. Windsurfing gets a mention too. Several also praise the restaurants and the charm of a lively town. The reviews so far are small in number but positive, and none records a drawback.

Hispalense is more than just a school. I spent 6 weeks in Tarifa learning Spanish at Hispalense. Would I recommend the school? Absolutely. Hispalense offer highly professional classes in a familiar atmosphere, which is unique. Moreover Tarifa is a fantastic place for windsurfing.

Best language learning experience I have ever had. Very friendly, flexible staff, professional teachers. Somehow you start speaking Spanish on a daily basis without realizing it. Not to mention the gorgeous beaches 1 minute away by foot. Also the town of Tarifa is a jewel.

Hispalense is an excellent language school, and our family will certainly return in future summers! I enrolled my seven-year-old son in Kids Club for two weeks in July, and he also benefited greatly from an additional private lesson (50 minutes) at the end of most days. The teaching quality was superb, and the staff were very warm and helpful. We chose Hispalense for several reasons, including: the school is Cervantes Institute accredited; it has a long-established Kids Club; and its teachers take the children into town almost every day (after classroom lessons) for immersion in the daily life of Tarifa (in contrast, Spanish-language summer camps in cities typically do this only once per week). The Hispalense teachers accompany the children to markets, historical sights and to places where the kids can do activities with local Spanish children; in this way, Hispalense capitalizes on the fact that Tarifa is a friendly, compact and perfectly safe coastal town (beautifully situated at the point where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet). We absolutely loved the town: Tarifa is charming and atmospheric, energized by young people, and full of great restaurants (not just seafood ones) just a short walk from Hispalense. Tarifa feels very manageable with kids, who will love the clean beaches -- one of which is a two-minute walk from Hispalense. Tarifa is a pleasant bus ride from Seville (which has a direct flight to London Gatwick), and is just across the sea from Morocco (the city center of Tangier is directly linked to Tarifa by FRS ferry). The Hispalense staff are more than happy to advise on excursions to Morocco and on the wide variety of activities on offer in Tarifa. My son's two weeks at Hispalense made for a truly wonderful experience, and we can't wait to go back!

Great school ! I did some Spanish language school in a far away past. In 2019 it was for the first time with my family. Hispalense Tarifa made it a great experience. Not only the staff Mariola \& Casper are very helpful \& flexible, but we also had great teachers. My teacher Bea is not only a great teachers, but helped me \& the other alumni’s around with many tips for living in Tarifa. Veronica, my children’s teacher and my wife’s teacher Maria \& later a male teacher (name ?) were also very good \& kind. We really can recommend (small) school. And Tarifa is a great place, beatifull beaches, nice town \& much more.

An absolutely brilliant experience! Tarifa is a wonderful setting and the instruction was superb. My Spanish took off and I obtained a level of fluency that I didn't really expect with only two weeks. I had been studying Spanish for years off and on and now realize how much time I had wasted. I should have done this type of school years ago!!

## Weekend trips from Tarifa

The ferry reaches Tangier in about 35 minutes, and the M-150 bus takes about 45 minutes to Algeciras. Long-distance buses serve [Cádiz](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/cadiz). Bolonia, which lies within Tarifa municipality, and Algeciras fit a free afternoon or a day. Tangier works as a day trip or a weekend. Gibraltar, Seville and Granada are also possible excursions.

The ferry from Tarifa arrives at the city port of Tangier. The medina and the Moroccan urban culture are the draw. An overnight stay gives you more time than a same-day visit.

Bolonia has a broad sandy beach and a large dune protected as a Natural Monument. The Roman city of Baelo Claudia and its archaeological museum stand beside the beach. Bolonia is best reached by car or by seasonal and local transport, so plan your return journey before you go.

Algeciras is a port city and regional transport hub, reached from Tarifa on the M-150 bus. It makes a practical half-day or full-day outing.

This protected forest and upland landscape reaches into the area around Tarifa. It is a setting for hiking and nature outings.

Cádiz is the capital of the province and a possible excursion from Tarifa. Long-distance buses connect the two.

Gibraltar is a possible excursion from Tarifa.

Seville is a possible excursion from Tarifa.

Granada is a possible excursion from Tarifa.

## Student life in Tarifa

Tarifa is small enough that the old town and Los Lances are both reachable on foot from the bus stop. That sets the pattern for the day: you move between the lanes and the sand without needing a plan. The social scene blends traditional Andalusian culture with an international crowd. It is a town for sitting over a plate of food and talking, and conversations start easily when everyone around you is also far from home. A few outings, such as Bolonia, call for a little planning, but daily life stays close to the centre.

### Getting to know the neighbourhoods

#### Walled old town

This is where evenings happen. Traditional courtyard houses line the narrow, winding streets, and the whole quarter is a declared historic-artistic complex. It suits students who like to eat out, hear live music and be in the middle of things.

![Los Lances](https://lingodays.com/api/v3/city-images/01a18784-7297-724f-a272-b8535693ea8a/large)

#### Los Lances

The beach side of town, west of the centre and reachable on foot from the bus stop. A protected coastal natural area runs along it, which makes it the place for long walks on open sand.

#### Bolonia

A separate coastal settlement within the municipality, with a broad beach and a large protected dune. It sits apart from the compact centre, so it works as a change of scene rather than as everyday ground.

### What everyday student life looks like

- Cycling and hiking routes in the surrounding natural parks
- Horse riding and climbing within reach of town
- A year-round international watersports crowd
- Whale watching in the Strait of Gibraltar

![Student life — Tarifa](https://lingodays.com/api/v3/city-images/01a18763-bc22-700a-91fa-723a567f55e0/large) Photo: [Escuela Hispalense](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/tarifa/escuela-hispalense)

## How Spanish is used in Tarifa

Spanish is the everyday language of Tarifa's old town, its tapas bars and its market. The town draws an international kitesurfing and windsurfing crowd, so on the beaches and around the water sports spots you will hear plenty of other languages too. Spanish will not simply surround you all day, so go looking for it. A good first target is the Mercado Público in the town centre. Buy your fish or fruit there, ask in Spanish what looks best that day, and do the same on your next visit. Everyday errands like this give you short, repeatable exchanges where the same phrases come up again and again.

## Things to do in Tarifa

Afternoons in Tarifa belong to the wind, the sea and a town small enough to cross on foot. Kitesurfing and windsurfing define the place, and an international crowd of riders gives the beaches their character. Which activities run depends on the school, the season and your travel dates, and some can be arranged independently. Away from the water, there are castle walls, fresh tuna and trails to explore.

### Pick your Tarifa

Wind and water

The shoreline is the main attraction. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, wingfoiling and diving are all practised here. [Escuela Hispalense](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/tarifa/escuela-hispalense) organises kitesurfing, windsurfing and diving, and a sea excursion to see whales and dolphins in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Culture and history

The walled old town is a tangle of narrow streets and traditional courtyard houses, entered through the Puerta de Jerez. Guzmán el Bueno Castle, a 10th-century caliphal fortress, stands inside it. The Church of San Mateo is the old town's main historic church.

Food and markets

Fresh Strait tuna and pescaíto frito are the dishes to try, alongside local fish and seafood. Browse the Mercado Público for the produce behind them. In the old town, tapas bars often put on live flamenco, so dinner and a show can happen in the same place.

Walks, wildlife and the outdoors

Protected landscapes surround the town: El Estrecho and Los Alcornocales natural parks, the Los Lances beach area and the Bolonia dune. The trails suit hiking and birdwatching. Cycling, climbing, horse riding and whale watching are also available in the area.

Social evenings and festivals

Evenings in the old town are lively, and tapas bars are the natural meeting point after a day on the water. In September the town celebrates Nuestra Señora de la Luz with a Feria and a mounted Cabalgata Agrícola, a procession that accompanies the patron saint from her sanctuary into town.

## Best time to study in Tarifa

For swimming, come between July and September, when the sea sits at 20 to 21°C. July averages no rainy days, and August is the warmest month. June and May are milder: June has highs near 25°C and just one rainy day, while the sea is still only 17 to 18°C. Spring sea temperatures stay between 15 and 17°C from March to May, which is cold for anything but a wetsuit. September adds the town's Feria and the Cabalgata Agrícola, a mounted procession honouring Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Winter is mild but wetter, with the most rainy days from December to February.

## How to get to Tarifa and get around

Tarifa has no airport and no train station, so the last leg of your journey is by bus, car or ferry. Jerez and Seville airports have no direct bus to Tarifa. From either, you travel to a bus station and pick up a connection there. Buses link the town with Algeciras, a regional port city about 45 minutes away on the M-150, and long-distance services run to [Cádiz](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/cadiz) and other regional destinations. Once you arrive, you can leave transport behind. The old town, with its narrow streets, and Los Lances are both within walking distance of the bus stop. A car or a seasonal bus only becomes useful for the outlying beaches.

### Getting there: common questions

Is there an airport or train station in Tarifa?

No. Tarifa has neither. Regional travel relies on buses, cars and ferries.

Is there a direct bus from the airport?

Not from Jerez or Seville airport. From either, you change at a bus station to reach Tarifa.

How do I get to Tarifa from Algeciras?

Take the M-150 bus. The journey takes about 45 minutes.

Do I need public transport once I am in Tarifa?

Not for the old town or Los Lances, which you can reach on foot from the bus stop. Bolonia is best reached by car or by seasonal and local transport.

Can I get to Africa from Tarifa?

Yes. A ferry links Tarifa with Tangier Ville.

Safety

## Is Tarifa safe? What students should know

Tarifa is generally a relaxed and easy place to study. The things worth knowing come from the sea and the wind. Open beaches and water sports are exposed to strong winds and changing sea conditions, so check the local forecast before you go out. Late transport to Bolonia and Valdevaqueros is limited, so plan your return journey before you head there.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Tarifa

Food shopping in Tarifa centres on the Mercado Público in the town centre. It is open Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 15:00, and sells fresh food and groceries. That makes it a natural stop on the way home from morning lessons. The hours matter: the market closes mid-afternoon, so do your shopping before or straight after class rather than leaving it until evening.

- Open Monday to Saturday
- Fresh food and groceries on sale
- Located in the town centre

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Tarifa

What kind of student does Tarifa suit?

Adults who want a small town rather than a big city. Lessons fill the morning, and afternoons go to the beach, the old town and the outdoors. If you like water sports, hiking or wildlife outings and are happy with a slower pace, it fits well.

What can I do with my afternoons?

You can head to the beaches, try kitesurfing or windsurfing, walk the old town, or hike in the protected natural parks nearby. In the evening, the old town has tapas bars, some with live flamenco.

Do I need to know how to kitesurf or windsurf to enjoy Tarifa?

No. Water sports are only one option. You can also explore the walled old town and Guzmán el Bueno Castle, eat fresh tuna and pescaíto frito, or walk the dunes and trails.
