Puerto de la Cruz is an old harbour town on Tenerife's Atlantic north coast, where fishing-quarter history sits alongside a long-established tourism trade. It is small and easy to read, which suits students who want a town to settle into rather than a city to keep up with. The historic centre holds more than 140 protected buildings, and the town has been a National Tourist Interest site since 1955. The shoreline is volcanic, with black sand, rocky bathing spots and saltwater pools, while Mount Teide and the Orotava Valley rise inland. After class you can wander the seafront, sit in a café around Plaza del Charco or swim before dinner. Your best Spanish practice will come from everyday conversations with the locals you meet along the way.

## Weekend trips from Puerto de la Cruz

La Orotava is the closest option at 9 km, with bus connections through the Orotava Valley, and fits a free afternoon. Garachico (36 km) is reached by island bus connections, and [Santa Cruz de Tenerife](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/santa-cruz-de-tenerife) (41 km) by TITSA bus. Teide National Park needs the most planning: line 348 runs from Puerto de la Cruz via La Orotava to El Portillo and the park parador, and the return timetable is limited. The language school also lists a Saturday excursion to Teide, Teno, La Gomera and Masca, run by [Don Quijote Tenerife](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/spanish/spain/puerto-de-la-cruz/don-quijote-tenerife).

La Orotava is the nearest day trip, reached by bus connections in the Orotava Valley. The Jardín Botánico de la Aclimatación de La Orotava is a visit in its own right, and the town also lies on the route towards Teide, so it pairs easily with a longer day.

Garachico is a historic town on the coast, far enough along the island that you should set aside a full day to enjoy it. Check the bus connections before you leave so that you know how you will get back.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island capital and its urban cultural centre. TITSA buses link it with Puerto de la Cruz, which makes it a straightforward day out when you want city streets and cultural sights.

Teide National Park offers volcanic scenery and hiking at high altitude. Line 348 runs direct from Puerto de la Cruz via La Orotava to El Portillo and the park parador. The return timetable is limited, so check the last bus back before you set out and build the day around it.

## Student life in Puerto de la Cruz

The language school is in the heart of town, five minutes on foot from Martiánez beach and ten from City Hall. A swim before the afternoon is realistic. After class, students drift towards the seafront promenade, the old harbour and the terraces around Plaza del Charco, where squares and cafés are the easiest places to meet people. The school's student community is mixed, and the weekly activity programme gives you regular chances to meet people beyond your own class. Buses matter mainly for trips beyond the centre. A short stay settles in within days. A longer one gives you time to find the quarter that suits you.

## How Spanish sounds in Puerto de la Cruz

The Spanish you hear on the street here is Canarian, and it does not sound like the Madrid Spanish of many textbooks. The first thing you notice is seseo: c before e or i, and z, are pronounced like an s, so "cerveza" has no lisp in it. The second is the final s. At the end of a syllable it softens into a light breath or disappears, so "las islas" can sound like "la ihla". The melody of the speech shares something with Caribbean Spanish. The vocabulary has its own quirks too: a bus is a *guagua*, and you will see and hear the word around the bus stops. For your immersion tip, use your free time after class to ask a local a question about the town, such as where to find good papas arrugadas. It gives you a real conversation to practise with, and your ear gets used to these habits.

Daily spending here depends mostly on how you eat and how far you travel. Supermarkets and small grocery shops cover the rest of the weekly shop.

Look for the menú del día at cafés and local restaurants, which commonly includes several courses. Central attractions are walkable, so buses only come into your budget for trips beyond the centre, where TITSA offers single fares and island-wide travel cards.

## Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz

Free time here splits between the old harbour, the market stalls, the volcanic shoreline and the mountains inland. Carnival adds its own season of parades, costumes and street dancing. Which activities run depends on the school, the season and your travel dates, so treat the list below as what the town makes possible.

Culture and history

Start with the Museo Arqueológico and its Guanche ceramics. Then walk through La Ranilla, the old fishing quarter, for its street art. The Casa de la Real Aduana by the harbour, the Castillo de San Felipe and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia are all part of the historic centre. The programme includes a cultural city tour and a visit to the Botanical Garden.

Food and markets

Order papas arrugadas with mojo, then try fresh local fish such as vieja. Ropa vieja, conejo en salmorejo, gofio and island cheeses also turn up on local menus. Cooking classes are also available.

Carnival

Carnival brings street parades, costume events, public dancing and live orchestras to the town. Matar la Culebra is a tradition with Afro-Cuban origins, and the Burial of the Sardine is part of the festivities. The street celebrations are public events you can attend.

Social life and new friends

The programme includes tapas nights, barbecues, movie screenings, salsa and other dance classes.

Sea, surf and outdoors

The sea is close at hand. Swim in the saltwater pools of Lago Martiánez, on black-sand Playa Jardín or in the rocky bathing areas along the coast. Surfers head for Playa Martiánez. Inland, the Orotava Valley and Teide National Park offer hiking. The Jardín Botánico de la Aclimatación in La Orotava makes a calmer green walk.

Safety

## Is Puerto de la Cruz safe? What students should know

Puerto de la Cruz is generally considered an easy place for students to settle into. The one concern worth naming is pickpocketing, which comes with any busy tourist town on the Spanish coast. It centres on the crowded stretches around the old harbour and the squares.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Puerto de la Cruz

Errands fit easily around class here. The Mercado Municipal is the best first stop for fresh produce, fish, cheese and mojo, and it also houses a pharmacy and other everyday services. Supermarkets and small grocery shops fill in whatever the market does not stock. Sundays are quieter: most small shops close, so buy what you need on Saturday. Restaurants, bars and some stores in tourist areas stay open. For a filling lunch, look for the menú del día at cafés and local restaurants, which usually runs to several courses.

- Market open Monday to Saturday 8:00 to 20:30
- Rastro market Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9:00 to 14:00
- Sunday eating out Restaurants and bars stay open
- Local produce to try Gofio, local cheeses and mojo
