Paris is a fast-moving capital where French shapes daily life. It suits students who want a big-city language trip with the Louvre, the Seine and a café terrace on every corner. Crowds and high costs come with the territory, and the city's pace keeps you talking. After class there is always somewhere to go, whether a museum, a riverside walk or a long café lunch. The language school keeps classes small and draws students from more than 40 nationalities, and its Walking in Paris outings take lessons out into the streets around the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars. English is widely understood in the busiest tourist spots, so you will often need to start the conversation in French yourself.

Things to do10

I had booked a four-week intensive French course and was placed at A1 level following the placement test. In Valérie and Isabelle, I had two wonderfully dedicated and competent teachers. Questions were usually answered immediately and in detail, and written assignments were marked promptly. Even texts or exercises that I had done at home on my own were corrected by both of them without any fuss. Both use a variety of teaching methods; in addition to classroom discussions, there were group work, speaking and language exercises with special support for those who were still a little weaker linguistically. There were also some listening comprehension exercises, often enriched with playful elements. The classes are indeed very international and also very mixed in terms of age groups; the atmosphere is warm and friendly. I really enjoyed the course and was able to improve my level from A1 to A2. However, there is no getting round the fact that you need to practise and consolidate what you have learnt outside of class as well. But Paris should give you ample opportunity to do so.

I studied French in Paris for only one week, but it was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend this school. Everything was very easy to arrange via email, and the administration was always helpful and responsive. The location is excellent, very close to the Eiffel Tower, with convenient access to buses and the metro. There is also a lovely boulangerie nearby where you can enjoy coffee and a croissant while practicing your French immediately. If you want to learn French and have a true Parisian experience, I really recommend this school. I would especially like to thank my teacher, Isabelle. She is not only a great teacher, but also a very smart, intelligent, and vibrant woman who made the lessons fun and interesting. She was kind, but also appropriately strict, which I think is the perfect combination for learning. I had a fantastic experience and would love to come back someday. I truly recommend this school! Merci beaucoup!

I spent a week in Paris at Accord School learning French, and as a professor of foreign languages, I truly appreciated the high quality of the teaching. The instructors are excellent, highly qualified and very experienced. The lessons are dynamic, and all language skills are consistently practiced. After just one week, I noticed a clear improvement in my French. The school’s location is also great, close to the Eiffel Tower, making it perfect for exploring the city. I highly recommend it!

I spent 10 weeks at Accord and truly saw a massive improvement in my French. This is mainly, I believe, due to the teachers being very dynamic and motivated, and it is clear they love their language. Not only do I feel that I learned a great deal of the language, but also of French culture. The school is also located in a very clean area of the city, directly across from the Eiffel Tower. Nearby are many restaurants and cafes.

I've been studying French for a long time and decided I needed an immersion course in order to advance. I found Accord online and booked a week of classes, just mornings as I wanted to be free in the afternoons to see Paris. It was a fabulous experience. All of my advance communications with the school were easy and clear. Their administrative staff is very responsive. Through a written exam, they placed me in a course which turned out to be the perfect level, challenging but manageable. My instructor, Jacqueline, was absolutely wonderful. She is possibly one of the most skilled classroom instructors I have ever studied with. She led the class at a pace that required rapt attention, she seemed to understand and respond to the needs of each student intuitively, and was able to seize "teachable moments" and turn them into timely and succinct mini-lessons within the lesson. I feel very fortunate to have found Accord and, in particular, Jacqueline. I hope to return soon!

I had the opportunity to study French at Accord School Paris, a well-known language school recognized for its modern and interactive teaching methods. The environment was friendly and motivating, and the teachers successfully combined theoretical lessons with practical activities that helped me improve my communication skills. The courses were dynamic and tailored to my needs, significantly contributing to my progress in understanding and speaking French. This experience was not only educational but also cultural, allowing me to discover Parisian life and gain confidence in expressing myself in French.

I studied at ACCORD for two weeks and following lessons at this school improved so much my french skills! The school is organised in different levels (A2, B1, B2 etc.) and each student is in the better class for them. The location is really good: metro-station is near and the Tour Eiffel is reachable in less than 10 minutes. Plus, the staff is kind and always ready to help you; I’m a foreign student and I got help with my accomodation, that I found only thanks to them. My experience in Paris has been great! You should definitely give a chance to ACCORD School if you’re looking for an improvement with your french.

I did an intensive French course at Accord this summer and had a great time. All the teachers are very professional and knowledgeable. What I loved most about my experience there was that they were teaching us real French, the Parisian, colloquial French that you cannot find in books. So many linguistic elements that I learned I wouldn't have been able to pick up elsewhere and I am very grateful for that. I didn't want to leave and I am already planning on coming back soon. Also the location of the school right next to the Eiffel Tower cannot be beaten, I had lunch with a view multiple times ;) I definitely recommend this school for your next language adventure in Paris! Merci a Victor, Jacqueline, Thierry et Reda, c'etait vraiment dingue :)

## Day trips and weekends beyond Paris

Most of the region's best-known sights are a short train ride from the city. Versailles and Saint-Denis are the closest, and Saint-Denis fits into a half-day. Giverny, Fontainebleau and Provins need a full day, with regional trains and a shuttle or local bus at the far end. Giverny takes about 1h15 via Vernon. The Loire Valley, Normandy and Champagne are better saved for a weekend with a night away.

The royal history here is told in two settings: the Hall of Mirrors inside the palace and the landscaped grounds outside it. The gardens are large, so leave time for them after the interior.

Giverny is a rural village with an impressionist pedigree.

The château brings palace history, and the forest around it is open for woodland walks and outdoor recreation. It makes a good choice when you want a trip that is part culture, part fresh air.

Provins is a UNESCO-listed town whose medieval heritage shows in its ramparts, the Tour César and its historic centre. It has a market square, and the old town is easy to cover on foot.

Barbizon is a quiet village of cobbled streets and art galleries, with a history tied to the Barbizon School of painters. It lies beside the Forest of Fontainebleau and is about an hour from Paris by car.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis and its royal tombs are the reason to come. It is the easiest trip on this list when you only have a free afternoon.

This regional natural park has wooded countryside, villages and historic sites. It suits a day of walking and exploring.

The Loire Valley is known for its châteaux and historic landscapes. An overnight or longer stay suits it better than a single day.

The Normandy coast makes a good weekend trip, with D-Day sites and coastal landscapes to visit. Staying overnight gives you more time than a day excursion.

Champagne is the region to choose for vineyard and cellar visits.

## Student life in Paris

Afternoons are where Paris does its teaching. Cafés, museums, riverside walks and public parks fill the hours after class, and all of that is close at hand. Beyond the classroom, Paris is an international capital with neighbourhood markets, terraces and public cultural events. Evenings run late, with bars, live music venues and long dinners across the central districts. Most students settle into one area and treat the rest as a short trip.

## Practising French on the streets of Paris

In Paris, French is the language of the street, and daily errands give you plenty of openings to use it. A bakery queue, a market stall and a café counter each offer a short exchange with a clear purpose: ask for something, understand the answer, pay. Local clubs and neighbourhood events lead to longer conversations once you feel ready for them. One tip is worth acting on: pick a market such as Bastille, Aligre or Raspail, and make it your weekly stop. Order your fruit and cheese in French, and try adding one new question each visit. It is a small routine, and it gives you real conversations to bring back to class the next morning.

What students say about Language practice

I was on holiday in Paris and also enrolled on the 2 week E intensive course - 7 hours a day, Monday to Friday. I had a fantastic time and met wonderful people in my learning experience. My teachers Jacqueline, Olivia and Edilberto were very knowledgeable, friendly and respectful of the students as individuals (I, for example, have got some hearing loss, and this was adjusted for in the teaching). My French benefited hugely in the fortnight there. Olivia in particular made us stand up and move in the class as we undertook communicative activities - thus there was lots of student talking time, which I, as an English teacher, appreciated no end. I would like to see more of this - sometimes a student would remain silent for a long time unless called upon, whilst others spoke a lot of English - unnecessarily. During this period, I gained inestimable confidence at Accord in using French in the real world eg in the Post Office, Shops and Restaurants- eschewing English - surprising even myself! As regards improvements: the classrooms that I was in could get uncomfortable owing to the summer heat - this was a recurrent problem throughout - the lessons would often get disrupted. The chairs in the classroom are those with a folding writing tablet' variety - for me, their desk space was too small - and being left-handed, a problem - so I'd be using the next chair's tablet to my left, if vacant.

Paris is the priciest of the French cities students usually weigh up, and rent and eating out are the main reasons. Central-city services add to the bill. Your housing choice, how often you sit on a café terrace and how you get around will shape your budget more than anything else.

Lower-cost lunch menus and bakeries are where students spend less. Make them your midday habit and keep restaurant dinners for occasions.

## Things to do in Paris

Step out of class and Paris offers a museum queue, a market stall, a park bench and a terrace with an empty table, often within a few minutes of each other. Which activities run depends on the language school, the season and your travel dates, and many of the best ones you can arrange yourself. Culture, food, music and green space all sit close at hand.

### What to do, by interest

Culture and landmarks

The Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou and Musée Carnavalet give you a different museum for every rainy afternoon. Musée du Quai Branly and Les Invalides, with Napoleon's tomb, sit close to the Eiffel Tower. Add Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle for history. The banks of the Seine are UNESCO-listed, and street art turns up across several districts.

Food and markets

Browse the open-air stalls at Marché Bastille, the covered Marché des Enfants Rouges in the Marais, Marché d'Aligre or Marché Raspail, which has an organic market on Sundays. Between market visits, work through the bakery classics: baguette, croissant and macaron. Order a croque-monsieur or French onion soup at a neighbourhood bistro. Baguette craft is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, so it deserves careful tasting.

Social life and music

Café terraces are where Paris meets friends, and bars and live music venues stay busy into the evening. On 21 June, the Fête de la Musique fills streets, squares, terraces and gardens with free performances across the city.

Parks and outdoors

Paris has more than 500 green spaces. The Champs de Mars and the Trocadéro gardens are a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. For more room, Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne are large wooded parks you can walk or cycle through. The Seine riverbanks suit an easy evening stroll, and boat trips show the city from the water. Cycling is well supported, with an extensive network and public bike facilities.

What students say about Things to do

I had the pleasure to attend the Accord French Language School in Paris. I had a wonderful experience. It was very easy to communicate with the reception and after I completed my placement test I was very pleased with the group I was placed in. I found it tailored to my level of French, while still challenging enough that I learned new things every day. The class groups are small, and everyone gets a chance to talk and participate in class in French which I found to be very helpful. The teachers are incredible. They are highly motivated, engaged and kind and come up with fun activities to teach you French. If you choose to do afternoon classes you can choose whether you want to focus on grammar or speaking skills which I thought was nice to have this flexibility. The school is also located in a great area- very close to the Eiffel tower, while being on a more quiet street surrounded by many boulangeries and cafes. I would recommend this school to absolutely anyone as the level of teaching is very high and professional. The cherry on top was that the school is very flexible, you can begin your course at the start of any week and you can book everything online in a very straightforward fashion. A 10/10 for me.

I’ve just finished 3 weeks at Accord and it was really good. As a 17 year old, I found the course awesome, but there were people of all ages and nationalities who I think really enjoyed it too. The lessons are interesting and varied, the teachers kind and funny and I felt that I improved a lot over a short amount of time. The classes are a good size, big enough it feels like you are able to meet new people, but small enough that you are able to practice speaking a lot and have the teacher help you. As well as this, it’s right next to the Eiffel Tower and lots of wonderful restaurants so an amazing part of Paris to be in. I’d definitely recommend for anyone.

## Best time to study in Paris

May and June are the best months to arrive. Daytime highs climb from about 20°C to nearly 24°C, and the rainy days drop from nine in May to eight in June, which suits the free afternoons after morning lessons. July and August are the warmest, with highs around 26°C and July the driest month at seven rainy days. September stays mild, with highs above 21°C. Giverny is a seasonal spring-to-autumn visit, so schedule that day trip within those months. Winter is the cold stretch: January highs sit below 8°C, and December has 11 rainy days, the most of any month. The Paris Christmas markets are the reason to book then, so bring a waterproof.

## How to get to Paris and get around

Three airports serve Paris, and each has its own way in. The RER B connects Charles de Gaulle (CDG) with Paris in about 25 to 30 minutes, and the Roissybus leaves from Place de l'Opéra. Orly (ORY) is linked by Metro line 14, a full-line journey of about 40 minutes, or by RER B to Antony and then the Orlyval. Beauvais (BVA) has dedicated airport coaches to the city. Once you are in Paris, walking accounts for 56% of trips within the city, helped by pedestrian streets, meeting zones and riverside paths. Public transport accounts for 31% of trips within Paris. A dense network of metro, RER, bus and tram lines connects central Paris and the surrounding suburbs. Single fares are fixed, and weekly and monthly passes are available. The city also has an extensive cycling network and public bike facilities.

### Getting there: common questions

Which airports serve Paris?

Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Paris-Orly (ORY) and Paris-Beauvais (BVA).

How do I get from Orly into the city?

Metro line 14 serves Orly, and the full-line journey takes about 40 minutes. You can also take the RER B to Antony and change to the Orlyval.

Do I need public transport every day?

Walking accounts for 56% of trips within Paris, and public transport accounts for 31%. How much you use the metro, RER, bus and tram depends on where you live and study.

Can I cycle around Paris?

Yes. The city has an extensive cycling network and public bike facilities.

Safety

## Is Paris safe? What students should know

Paris is generally regarded as a place where students study without trouble, with the caveats of any big European capital. Pickpocketing is the routine one, mostly on crowded metro and RER trains, in stations and around the main landmarks. Tourist scams are reported in the Latin Quarter and around Notre-Dame. Strikes and demonstrations can also disrupt transport.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Paris

Shopping in Paris follows a weekly rhythm. Many shops close or shorten their hours on Sundays, so do your main shop earlier in the week. Food markets run on set weekdays, in the morning or during the day. Marché Bastille opens on Sunday mornings, and Marché Raspail adds an organic market that day. Supermarkets and convenience groceries cover household basics, and the markets are the place for fresh produce. Neighbourhood cafés and bistros serve weekday lunch menus and daily dishes.

- Pharmacies are widespread across the city
- Student restaurants and university dining halls Subsidised meals for eligible students
- Weekday lunch set menus at neighbourhood bistros
- Open-air and covered food markets Fresh produce and groceries

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Paris

Is Paris expensive for a student?

Everyday costs are high, mainly because of rent and eating out. Your choice of housing, your café habits and how often you use transport shape the budget most. Bakeries and weekday lunch menus are where you can spend less.

What is there to do after class?

Museums, riverside walks, parks, café terraces and food markets fill the afternoons. Bars and live music venues keep the evenings busy. On 21 June the Fête de la Musique brings free performances to streets, squares and gardens across the city.

Can I take trips outside Paris?

Yes. Versailles and Saint-Denis are nearby, and Saint-Denis fits into a half-day. Giverny, Fontainebleau and Provins each suit a full day. The Loire Valley, Normandy and Champagne are better saved for a weekend with a night away.

Does Paris have beaches?

No. Paris is an inland city on the Seine. Parks, riverbanks and the large wooded Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne are the places for outdoor time.

Is Paris suitable if I have never studied French before?

Yes. Daily errands in bakeries, markets and cafés give you short, practical exchanges with a clear purpose: ask for something, understand the answer, pay. You can start building on those from your first week.
