Worthing is a small seaside town on England's south coast, with the South Downs rising just behind it. A language trip here centres on a long shingle beach, an Art Deco pier and a promenade where you can walk off a morning of lessons. It suits students who want to concentrate on their English without a big city's noise. After class, seafront cafés and independent shops fill the afternoons, and the downs are close enough for a weekend walk. Evenings run to theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and live music.

## What students say about Worthing

Students who have studied in Worthing single out two things they enjoyed: the calm atmosphere of the town and the nature around it. Both are within easy reach of town, on the seafront or up on the South Downs just to the north. Between lessons, that gives you plenty of quiet space to unwind.

I've had a great time on my 10 weeks language stay at CES Worthing school. The teachers are very friendly and teach with a big experiance and also the staff is always nice and help the students in every situation. While my stay in Worthing I had a very nice and interested family and at school I got to know many cool people from all over the world. At the weekends I had the opportunity to go on organised trips, even with guys from other schools and if I wanted to keep it a little more calm I could always go out in the nearby surrounding nature of Worthing. All in all, a nice and small school with cool people in a calm town.

## Weekend trips from Worthing

The south coast and the downs are both within easy reach. Brighton is a direct train away, 25 to 30 minutes. Shoreham and Lancing are reached by rail or local bus, so either fits a free afternoon. Cissbury Ring suits a half day, with a bus toward Findon Valley. Portsmouth is 1 hour 10 minutes by train and suits a full day or a weekend. London is 1 hour 30 minutes by direct service and works best as a weekend.

Brighton combines a seafront with shops and cultural venues, so a day here can mix a walk by the sea with browsing and an indoor stop.

The 3 to 4 mile circuit takes you around the remains of a large prehistoric hillfort and across chalk grassland. Along the way you get views of the South Downs and the coast.

Shoreham has a harbour, the River Adur and Shoreham Beach Local Nature Reserve, where a boardwalk crosses rare vegetated shingle. Riverside walks add a second, quieter option for the same day.

Lancing has a shingle shoreline lined with beach huts, an open greensward, a playground and a BMX and skatepark.

Portsmouth is a historic waterfront city along the coast, and the train brings you straight into it.

London has major museums, theatres and historic districts, more than a single day can cover.

## Student life in Worthing

The promenade runs along the shingle, and the seafront cafés along it are an easy place to land once lessons are over. The town has a reputation for welcoming visitors, and its centre mixes high-street names with independent businesses. Evenings lean towards theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and live music, with pubs, bars and restaurants gathered around the town centre and West End. Clubbing is not the draw. The centre is compact enough to cross on foot, and the local social scene is built from small venues and public events rather than big crowds. Whether you stay for a few weeks or several months, daily life stays easy to manage.

## How English sounds in Worthing

English is the main language for the large majority of people who live here, so you will hear it everywhere you go. The accent is contemporary south-eastern English. Sussex speech varies from person to person and is not one sharply distinct accent, and traditional county dialect features are not uniformly used in modern speech. That makes Worthing a gentle place to train your ear. For your one immersion habit, go to the Saturday language-café sessions, where informal conversation is the whole point and a different language theme runs on selected weeks. Arrive with a question ready and use it to start talking. Cafés, markets and local groups give you everyday practice between sessions, and community classes offer more structured conversation.

## Things to do in Worthing

Free afternoons in Worthing can go to an Art Deco pier, a museum, the seafront or a stretch of chalk downland just north of town. Which activities run depends on the school, the season and your travel dates, and some can be arranged independently. The cards below group them by the kind of week you want.

### Pick your kind of week

Culture

Walk out along Worthing Pier, a Grade II listed Art Deco structure named UK Pier of the Year in 2019, and look in at its Pavilion Theatre. Worthing Museum and Art Gallery covers local history, fashion, archaeology and art, and holds a major costume collection. The town's venues stage plays, comedy, cabaret and live music, and the Dome Cinema suits a rainy evening. [CES Worthing](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/english/england/worthing/ces-worthing) organises free museum visits and walking tours for its students.

Food and markets

The Wednesday market on Montague Street is a good place to browse stalls selling produce and local goods. The farmers' market follows on the third Saturday of each month. Local food history stretches from Worthing tomatoes, once grown in market gardens and glasshouses, to the mackerel on the town emblem. Town pubs pour Sussex ales and locally brewed beer.

Social life and events

The Worthing carnival has run over the August Bank Holiday weekend for more than 100 years. The rest of the year, pubs, bars and restaurants cluster around the town centre and West End. Film, comedy and live music fill the evenings. Seafront events add to the calendar.

Coast and downs

The promenade runs beside about five miles of beach, mostly shingle, with sand and rock pools showing at low water. Sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are all practised on this coast, and local swimming-zone restrictions apply. Inland, the 3 to 4 mile Cissbury Ring circuit takes in Iron Age hillfort remains, chalk grassland and sea views. Highdown Gardens, a chalk garden on the edge of the South Downs, makes a calmer walk with downland alongside.

## Best time to study in Worthing

July and August are the warmest months, with average highs close to 20°C. The sea is warmest in August and stays nearly as warm in September, so late summer is the time to plan a swim. June has the fewest rainy days in the monthly averages, and May is close behind, which suits promenade and South Downs walks with fewer showers. Winter is the quiet season. November has the most rainy days, and from December to March average highs stay between 7.7°C and 9.5°C.

## How to get to Worthing and get around

London Gatwick Airport is about 35 miles from Worthing, and rail connections and a National Express coach service both link the airport with the town. Heathrow is about 70 miles away, and Southampton Airport is also within reach. Once you arrive, the town centre and promenade are easy to cover on foot. The station is about a 15-minute walk from the heart of the town centre, and the pier is about 20. Buses connect the districts and nearby coastal towns, and five local rail stations serve the wider suburbs and the coast. The promenade suits both walking and cycling, and cycle racks are provided around the centre.

### Getting there: common questions

Do I need a car to get around?

No. The town centre and promenade are walkable, and local buses connect the districts and neighbouring coastal towns.

Can I cycle in Worthing?

Yes. The promenade supports cycling, and there are cycle racks around the town centre.

Can I use public transport to reach places outside town?

Yes. Local buses and rail stations connect Worthing with nearby coastal towns. For Cissbury Ring, take a bus toward Findon Valley.

Safety

## Is Worthing safe? What students should know

Worthing is generally regarded as a safe and secure town to study in. The concern worth knowing about is after dark. Young people in the town report feeling uneasy around town-centre nightlife, on public transport and on the streets at night, and the areas around the train stations come up in particular.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Worthing

Large supermarkets in Worthing open early and close in the evening from Monday to Saturday. Sundays are different. Large shops may trade for only six continuous hours between 10:00 and 18:00, and supermarket hours can be shorter still. The central supermarket, for example, opens from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays. Weekday lunch is commonly served from around 12:00, and a local set lunch menu runs from 12:00 to 17:00. Supermarkets and convenience stores in the town centre and suburban shopping areas cover everyday essentials, while the weekly and monthly markets add fresh produce and household goods.

- Weekday pub lunches Fixed-price menus, a cheaper option than ordering à la carte
- Café lunch specials Another low-cost midday choice
- Montague Street Market stalls and cafés for budget meals

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Worthing

Is Worthing a good choice if I want a quiet place to study English?

Yes, if you prefer a small seaside town to a big city. The pace is calm and the centre is compact. The promenade and the South Downs offer quiet places to walk between lessons. Students who have studied here single out the calm atmosphere and the nature around the town.

What is there to do in the evenings?

Evenings lean towards theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and live music. Pubs, bars and restaurants are gathered around the town centre and West End. Worthing is not a clubbing destination, so expect small venues and public events, not big-city nightlife.

Will I hear English all day?

Mostly, yes. English is the main language for the large majority of residents, and the local accent is contemporary south-eastern English, not a sharply distinct dialect. You still need to start conversations yourself, in cafés, markets and local groups. Weekly Saturday language-café sessions with rotating language themes are also held in the town.

The pace is calm and the centre is compact. The promenade and the South Downs offer quiet places to walk between lessons. Students who have studied here single out the calm atmosphere and the nature around the town."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What is there to do in the evenings?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Evenings lean towards theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and live music. Pubs, bars and restaurants are gathered around the town centre and West End. Worthing is not a clubbing destination, so expect small venues and public events, not big-city nightlife."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Will I hear English all day?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Mostly, yes. English is the main language for the large majority of residents, and the local accent is contemporary south-eastern English, not a sharply distinct dialect. You still need to start conversations yourself, in cafés, markets and local groups. Weekly Saturday language-café sessions with rotating language themes are also held in the town."}}]}
