Oxford is a small university city where you can walk from a college lane to the Bodleian, then on to the Ashmolean, before your coffee has gone cold. It suits students who like days filled with history, museums and riverside paths. On a dry afternoon you might cross Christ Church Meadow or watch punts drift along the Cherwell. On a wet one, there is always another museum. Evenings revolve around pubs, college events and the cafés and stalls of the Covered Market.

## What students say about Oxford

## Weekend trips from Oxford

Blenheim Palace, near Woodstock, is about 20 minutes away by car, or by train to Hanborough and then a connecting bus. Burford is about 30 minutes by car, and the bus works if you plan around the timetable. Bath is one to two hours by train. London has direct trains and coaches. Blenheim and Burford fill a free day, Bath needs a full day, and London or the Cotswolds are worth a whole weekend.

Blenheim is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between the palace rooms and the gardens, you will want a whole day, and the Churchill connection gives the visit a clear story to follow.

Burford suits a relaxed day. Browse the shops, stop for a meal at one of the restaurants and follow the footpaths out into the countryside.

Bath combines the Roman Baths and thermal springs with Georgian architecture, which makes it a rewarding full-day city trip.

Moreton-in-Marsh is another Cotswold town built in honey-coloured stone, and it suits a day visit.

London rewards more than a single day. A weekend or longer gives you time for the museums, theatres and historic sites, and for exploring several of its neighbourhoods.

The Cotswolds are countryside and villages west of Oxford. A weekend lets you visit several villages at a relaxed pace, with countryside walks, historic churches and market towns along the way.

## Student life in Oxford

Oxford is a city of people in transit with a book under one arm: students cycling down a college lane, queuing for coffee, drifting towards the river once the library closes. Two universities bring 34,945 full-time students, and 35% of residents were born outside the UK. The crowd around you is young and international. Clubs, societies, sports groups and volunteering give it plenty of places to meet. After class, students wander between cafés, museums and parks, or meet friends in a pub or the Covered Market. The language school is in the village of Wheatley, 8.1 km (about 10 miles) from the centre. That makes the city a trip rather than a doorstep habit, so evenings out in the centre need a little planning.

### Getting to know the neighbourhoods

#### The city centre

The colleges, libraries and museums stand close together here, and so do the pubs, bars and evening venues. It is the place for a long afternoon of wandering and for meeting people after your lessons end.

Headington

#### Headington

An east Oxford neighbourhood with a library and everyday local services. It feels more like residential Oxford than the postcard centre, which makes it a practical stop for ordinary errands.

Wheatley

#### Wheatley

A village on the edge of the Oxford area, and the location of the language school. It is a quieter base than the centre, with local amenities close by, and a more lively evening means making the journey into the city.

## English in daily use in Oxford

English is the main language of daily life in Oxford, so ordinary errands become practice. You order at a café counter, ask a stallholder in the market about their produce, or talk to the person beside you in a library. You will hear many kinds of English, spoken by people used to sharing it with learners. The habit worth building is a weekly one: a free adult language café and language swap runs at Headington Library every Tuesday evening. A free language café also takes place at the central library in Westgate, which gives you a second option when your week does not fit the first.

Oxford is an expensive place to live as a student, and that is the honest starting point for any budget. Accommodation sits inside that high cost, so it is worth checking early what your housing includes. Day to day, your spending depends largely on your own choices. Weekday lunch specials and meal deals in pubs and cafés give you set options. City buses use fixed zone passes if you need them.

## Things to do in Oxford

Oxford rewards a free afternoon: a museum to duck into when it rains, a meadow to cross when it clears, a riverbank for the hour after that. Evenings fill up with pubs, college events and music. Which activities run depends on the school, the season and your travel dates, and some can be arranged independently.

### Ways to spend your time

Culture and history

The Ashmolean, the Pitt Rivers and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History are the big three. Add the Bodleian Libraries, the Radcliffe Camera and Oxford Castle with its Saxon tower. On rainy days, try the History of Science Museum, Modern Art Oxford or the Story Museum. [CES Oxford](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/english/england/oxford/ces-oxford) organises a free walking tour and a museum visit as part of its activity programme.

May Morning

On 1 May, people gather at 6am around Magdalen Bridge and the High Street to hear Magdalen College Choir welcome the spring. If your course dates fall in early May, set an alarm.

Rivers and green space

Punting on the Cherwell or the Thames is the classic Oxford outing. On foot, University Parks has riverside paths, lawns and sports grounds, while Christ Church Meadow offers a historic riverside walk. Both suit a picnic or a run.

Evenings and new friends

City-centre pubs, bars and evening venues keep things busy after dark, and Cowley Road adds restaurants and more bars. College events and student venues add to the mix. University clubs and societies, from sports to cultural and volunteering groups, are a way to meet people beyond your classmates. Some colleges hold formal hall dinners in gowns.

## Best time to study in Oxford

Oxford's climate is mild, and it rains in every month, so a waterproof earns its place in your bag whatever the season. July and August are the warmest months, with highs above 22°C. June is close behind and has fewer rainy days than most of the year. If you want to be out on the rivers or in University Parks, June to August gives you the best odds. Winter is cold, and November to January are among the wettest months, with 12 rainy days each. Those weeks suit museums, libraries and a lunch in the Covered Market.

### Month by month

| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rainy days |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | 8°C | 2°C | 12 |

## How to get to Oxford and get around

Heathrow and Gatwick both have direct coach services to Oxford, and the service runs 24 hours a day, so a late landing still has a way into the city. National Express coaches also link Oxford with Luton and Stansted, and trains run to Oxford from Birmingham Airport. Once you arrive, the railway station is a short walk from the middle of town. Buses connect the city with the surrounding areas, which matters if your base lies outside the centre.

### Getting there: common questions

Can I get to Oxford if I land at night?

Yes. The direct coach between Heathrow or Gatwick and Oxford runs 24 hours a day.

Is there an airport in Oxford itself?

London Oxford Airport is the nearest airport and is used for private and business transfers. Students on commercial flights use the London airports, with direct coaches from Heathrow and Gatwick and National Express links from Luton and Stansted.

How do bus tickets work in Oxford?

City bus passes are organised by zone. The CityZone weekly adult pass is available through the app.

Can I reach Oxford by train from an airport?

Yes, from Birmingham Airport, where rail services run on to Oxford.

Safety

## Is Oxford safe? What students should know

Oxford is generally considered a comfortable place to study, and most residents say they feel at ease in the city centre during the day. Fewer feel the same after dark, and alcohol-related antisocial behaviour at night is the concern that comes up. It is a pattern familiar from many busy university and pub-filled city centres.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Oxford

Lunch is the easy meal to keep cheap here. Pubs and cafés run weekday lunch specials and meal deals, and the Covered Market has independent traders, cafés and bars under one roof. For fresh food, Gloucester Green Market sets up its stalls from midweek to Saturday, with local and international dishes. Supermarkets and convenience stores are found across Oxford, including Cowley Road, St Aldates, Magdalen Street and Banbury Road. Sunday needs planning. Large shops in England have restricted Sunday trading hours, and individual market traders set their own.

- Cowley supermarket, Monday to Saturday Open 6am to midnight
- Cowley supermarket on Sunday Open 10am to 4pm
- Covered Market on Sunday Open with reduced hours
- Lunch Commonly 12pm to 2pm
- Dinner Commonly 5pm to 7:30pm in student dining settings
- Covered Market on other days Hours vary by day and trader

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Oxford

Do I need to live in the city centre to enjoy Oxford?

No. The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bike, and buses connect the surrounding areas to the city. If your base is outside the centre, an evening out in town needs a little planning.

What can I do in Oxford when it rains?

Oxford has plenty of museums, including the Ashmolean, the Pitt Rivers and the Museum of Natural History. The Bodleian Libraries and the Covered Market are also good places to shelter from the rain.

Can I visit other places while I study in Oxford?

Yes. Blenheim Palace and Burford fit into a free day. Bath is a full-day trip by train, and London or the Cotswolds suit a weekend.
