Leeds is Yorkshire's working capital, a big, busy city of Victorian civic buildings, shopping arcades and a resident opera and ballet company scene that few cities outside London can match. It suits students who want a real city rather than a resort. As a commercial, cultural and university hub, Leeds has a large and growing student population, so people your age fill the cafes, pubs and parks. Plenty is on at any time of day, and across the week. Yorkshire people have a name for warmth and hospitality, and chatting with locals in shops and on buses is where you will test that for yourself. The city is mid-sized by British standards, but the centre never feels remote from anything you need.

## Weekend trips from Leeds

Leeds is a good base for day trips, and most of them start at the railway station. Saltaire is the shortest hop, easy to fit around an afternoon. York, Ilkley, Harrogate, Halifax and Hebden Bridge are each a direct train away and fill a day. Haworth and Bolton Abbey need a train plus a local bus, so give them a full day. The Dales and the North York Moors reward a weekend.

Saltaire is a UNESCO-listed Victorian industrial village. Salts Mill holds a collection of David Hockney artworks, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs alongside. It works as a relaxed half-day or a full day.

York has Roman roots, medieval streets and walls, York Minster and several major museums. You can see a good deal in a day, or stay overnight and make it a weekend.

Ilkley has Cow and Calf Rocks, panoramic moorland paths and an independent town centre of shops and cafes. Walk first, then settle into a cafe afterwards.

Harrogate is known for its spa-town architecture, Valley Gardens, boutiques and tea rooms. It suits an unhurried day.

Haworth is a full day of literary sightseeing and walking. The Brontë Parsonage Museum, a cobbled main street, independent shops and the surrounding moorland are all within easy reach of each other. Getting there takes a train to Keighley, then a local bus or the heritage railway.

Hebden Bridge has independent shops, an arts scene and Pennine countryside on its doorstep. Spend the day browsing the town and heading out on walks.

Skipton has a medieval castle, market-town streets and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It also makes a handy base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Knaresborough has a historic castle, a riverside setting and views of its viaduct. River Nidd boat trips run from the town.

Regional train and bus connections link Leeds with the Dales. The area is made for walking and village-hopping, and a quick visit does not do it justice.

The North York Moors are reached by rail plus onward local transport. They suit a weekend of moorland scenery and visits to rural towns.

## Student life in Leeds

Leeds is a working city, and the centre is compact enough to cross on foot. After lessons, students drift towards independent cafes, student-area pubs, cinemas and live-music venues, or take a book to one of the parks. The large student population means you will meet plenty of people your own age. Yorkshire people have a reputation for warmth, which tends to show in small exchanges at counters and bus stops. The city suits a short course and a longer stay equally well, because festivals, theatre and museums keep the calendar full all year. Outside the centre, the student districts are linked to it by buses and local trains, so a home base a little further out still keeps you close to the action.

### Getting to know the neighbourhoods

#### City centre

Most of your free time goes here. The Victorian arcades, the Corn Exchange and Call Lane's bars all sit within walking distance of each other, so an evening out rarely needs a plan or a ticket.

#### Hyde Park

The most student-heavy part of Leeds, and one of its most culturally diverse. You can walk to the university campuses, and Woodhouse Moor beside it has tennis courts and a skate park. Frequent buses run into the centre.

#### Headingley

Student-oriented pubs, bars and music venues give it a lively evening scene of its own. Buses and local trains connect it with the centre. It suits students who would rather go out close to home than head into town.

## How English sounds in Leeds

Leeds speaks English with a recognisably northern, West Yorkshire accent. Listen for *owt* (anything), *nowt* (nothing) and *summat* (something). Some traditional speakers also shorten "the" to *t'*, though these forms are not universal and vary by speaker and age. Much of contemporary Leeds speech has been levelled out, keeping a northern edge alongside a few Yorkshire features, so everyday conversation stays easy to follow. English is the principal everyday language in Leeds, and the city also has substantial multilingual communities, so you will hear other languages on the street too. For practice, join one of the weekly conversation groups or recurring language-exchange meetups in the city centre, where English is spoken alongside other languages.

## Things to do in Leeds

Leeds packs museums, markets, live music and big parks into one city, so the hours after class rarely go empty. Which activities run depends on the school, the season and your travel dates, and plenty can be arranged independently. Some of the best ones cost little more than a bus fare.

Culture

Kirkstall Abbey is a well-preserved medieval monastery. The Royal Armouries holds the national collection of arms and armour. Leeds City Museum and Leeds Art Gallery, with its twentieth-century British art, sit in the centre. Resident opera and ballet companies, theatre and live music fill the evenings, and the annual film festival and Light Night add to the calendar.

Food and markets

Kirkgate Market is a large indoor market with a street-food hall and stalls of fresh produce. Seasonal farmers', craft and makers' markets appear around the city. Yorkshire pudding turns up in local street-food dishes. To eat it the traditional way, order a Sunday roast.

Social life

Cafes, pubs and live-music venues fill the centre, and Call Lane is the lively bar street. Hyde Park and Headingley have student-oriented pubs, bars and music venues. In summer, the Leeds West Indian Carnival brings music and dance to Chapeltown. [CES Leeds](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/english/england/leeds/ces-leeds) organises pub evenings, international dinners, bowling and karaoke nights.

Parks and the outdoors

Roundhay Park has lakes, streams, gardens and sports pitches. Golden Acre Park offers lakeside walks, ponds and woodland. Woodhouse Moor has tennis courts and a skate park. Further out, Ilkley Moor and Otley Chevin have countryside walking, and the Yorkshire Dales and Pennine moorland suit longer hikes. At Yeadon Tarn you can try sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, rowing or stand-up paddleboarding.

## Best time to study in Leeds

July and August are the warmest months in Leeds, with highs of 19 to 20°C. June and September follow at 17°C, and September has the fewest rainy days of the year. Winter, from December to February, is the coldest stretch, with lows close to freezing and highs of 6 to 7°C. Rain falls in every month, with 11 to 14 wet days each time, so a waterproof is useful whenever you come. The calendar also shifts with the season. The Leeds West Indian Carnival in Chapeltown and the Leeds Festival fall in summer, and Light Night fills the city centre with illuminated artworks in autumn.

## How to get to Leeds and get around

Most students fly into Leeds Bradford Airport, about 8.5 miles from the city centre. The FLYER bus runs direct between the airport and Leeds, and a taxi or pre-booked private hire is the alternative if you land late or have heavy bags. Train and bus through-tickets via Leeds station and the A1 airport bus also work. Manchester Airport is the other option, linked to Leeds by regular trains. The main bus and train stations are a short walk from the language school.

### Getting there: common questions

Which airport should I fly into for Leeds?

Leeds Bradford Airport is the closest, about 8.5 miles from the city centre. Manchester Airport is the other option, with regular rail connections to Leeds.

How do I get from Leeds Bradford Airport to the city centre?

The FLYER bus runs direct between the airport and Leeds. You can also take a taxi or pre-booked private hire, or buy a through-ticket combining the A1 airport bus with a train via Leeds station.

Do I need public transport once I am in Leeds?

Not for the centre, which is compact enough to cover on foot. Buses and local trains serve the outer neighbourhoods, including Headingley and Burley Park, with links back into Leeds station.

Is the language school close to the train and bus stations?

Yes. The main bus and train stations are a short walk from the language school.

Are there student discounts on local buses?

Yes. Discounted weekly and monthly MCard bus tickets are available to eligible students and 19 to 25-year-olds.

Safety

## Is Leeds safe? What students should know

Leeds is generally regarded as a manageable city for students, with the same concerns as any big British city. The one Leeds-specific point is nightlife: around the busy city-centre bars late at night, keep your drink in sight and use a licensed taxi or pre-booked private hire to get home.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Leeds

Leeds runs on standard English shop hours. Most shops open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00, and the large supermarkets trade later than the high street, so an evening shop after class is easy. Sundays are shorter. Many shops open from 11:00 to 17:00, and large stores face restricted hours, so do your main shop on Saturday. Lunch is the main daytime meal, eaten around 12:00 to 14:00, which fits neatly with a lunch break between morning lessons and afternoon plans. Quick, cheap meals are easy to find, and the list below shows where to look.

- Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's across the city
- Kirkgate Market for household goods
- Pharmacies near the centre and student neighbourhoods

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Leeds

Is Leeds an expensive place to study?

Leeds sits slightly below York, Manchester and Liverpool on cost, and well below London, Oxford and Cambridge.

Is Leeds considered safe for students?

Street marshals support the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

Which part of Leeds suits me as a base?

Headingley has shops, restaurants and sports venues.
