## Weekend trips from Eastbourne

Eastbourne's station puts much of the Sussex coast on one rail line. Lewes is about 26 minutes away, Hastings 25 to 37 minutes, Brighton under 40 and London about 90. Lewes and Hastings fit a free afternoon or a day. Brighton and the Seven Sisters coast, which buses serve, each take a full day. London and Rye are worth a weekend.

Brighton combines a seafront with cultural attractions and shopping. It is a bigger, busier seaside city than Eastbourne, which makes the contrast easy to see.

The direct train runs to London Victoria, so there is no change on the way in. The city offers museums, galleries, theatres and its major attractions.

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and sits in South Downs countryside. After the shingle and promenade at home, it makes a quieter inland change of scene.

Hastings is another seaside town, reached along the same coast line. Its historic Old Town gives you something different from Eastbourne's Victorian seafront. The line continues from here towards Rye.

Rye is reached on the Marshlink rail route via Hastings. The town is a tangle of cobbled streets, timber-framed buildings and historic churches.

Buses link Eastbourne with East Dean and Exceat, so you can start walking without a car. The park has chalk cliffs, Cuckmere Haven and a network of walking routes.

## Student life in Eastbourne

After class, Eastbourne asks very little of you. The places to spend an afternoon are simple: a café, a seafront bench or a public garden when the sun is out. Evenings are low-key, built around pubs, restaurants, a theatre show or a summer concert at the Bandstand. Nobody expects a club night. The town is friendly, and a short course or a long one both fit its pace. Informal international meetups and group outings give you a way to meet people beyond your own class.

## How English is spoken in Eastbourne

English is the main language in Eastbourne, so everyday life here, from the bus to the café counter, runs in it. The town also has a comparatively large multilingual population for East Sussex, which means you will share the streets with plenty of people who are learning, or have learnt, English as another language. Local speech even has an entry in the International Dialects of English Archive, if you want to hear how Eastbourne sounds before you arrive. For one concrete way to practise, go to the weekly social meetups that advertise English practice for people whose first language is not English.

Eastbourne is the low-cost option among the school's locations, with comparatively low tuition and accommodation costs. Everyday spending is easy to keep down. Supermarket meal deals, sandwiches and soup cover lunch, market stalls add cheap casual options, and budget supermarkets are in town and at Sovereign Harbour.

The seafront and clifftop walks cost nothing, which balances the paid side of the week: cafés, theatre tickets and live music.

## Things to do in Eastbourne

Eastbourne gives you chalk cliffs, gallery rooms, market stalls and a long, flat seafront for your free hours. Activities depend on the school, the season and your travel dates, and some can be arranged independently.

### Ways to spend your time

Culture and heritage

Towner Eastbourne shows modern and contemporary art, and it hosted the Turner Prize in 2023. Smaller stops include the Heritage Centre and the Lifeboat Museum, housed in the former lifeboat house. Walk out to the Victorian pier and the Wish Tower, a Napoleonic-era Martello tower.

Food, markets and local drinks

Fish and chips are served along the seafront. A monthly farmers' market sets up outside Towner, and street-food, local-produce, craft and vintage stalls appear at other markets. Antiques markets run in Victoria Place. If you are old enough, try Sussex sparkling wine and locally produced ales, gin and cider.

Walks and the outdoors

The seafront promenade runs for about three flat miles beside the shingle beach. West of town, the cliff path climbs towards Beachy Head, then continues to Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters. The South Downs Way lies close behind. At Sovereign Harbour you can follow the marina walks and watch the outer harbour for seals.

Social life and new friends

Informal international meetups organise group outings and social evenings. Seafront events and town-centre markets give you a reason to wander out with classmates.

Seasonal highlights

Devonshire Park hosts an international tennis tournament in June, in the week before Wimbledon. The Airbourne air show takes over the seafront each year. In November, bonfire and fireworks events light up the town.

## Best time to study in Eastbourne

July and August are the warmest months, the best choice for beach afternoons and long seafront walks after class. June is the pick if you want almost the same warmth without peak summer: it has the fewest rainy days of the year, and the Devonshire Park tennis tournament arrives that month. Autumn and winter are wetter, and November, December and January have the most rainy days, so pack a waterproof. If you would rather have a calm town and cosy cafés than the beach, winter suits you. The November bonfire and fireworks events light up the darker months.

## How to get to Eastbourne and get around

Most routes in start at London Gatwick, and the last leg is simple: a direct train runs from the airport to Eastbourne in under an hour, with no change in London. If you land at Heathrow, you can travel via London or connect to Gatwick for the onward rail services. [ST Giles Eastbourne](https://www.extralingo.com/en/language-schools/english/england/eastbourne/st-giles-eastbourne) organises single-journey transfers from several London airports, which helps after a late or tiring arrival, and National Express coaches and local buses also serve the town. Once you are here, the centre is flat and compact enough to cross on foot, with the station, shops and seafront all within an easy walk. Buses cover the harbour and outlying areas, and bus 99 runs to Sovereign Harbour from the pier and town centre. Weekly and monthly saver tickets suit anyone who rides daily.

### Getting there: common questions

Which airport should I fly into?

London Gatwick has a direct train to Eastbourne that takes under an hour. London Heathrow also works, but you will need to travel via London or connect to Gatwick for the rail link.

Can I get a transfer arranged for my arrival?

Airport transfers can be arranged through the language school, which lists journeys from several London airports. Coaches and buses also serve Eastbourne if you prefer to make your own way.

Do I need public transport to get around Eastbourne?

Not much in the centre, which is flat and walkable. Buses serve the seafront, the harbour and outlying areas, and local bus travel has weekly and monthly saver options.

How do I reach Sovereign Harbour?

Take local bus 99, which runs from the pier and the town centre to the harbour.

Safety

## Is Eastbourne safe? What students should know

Eastbourne is generally regarded as a relatively safe place to study, and the local Community Safety Partnership has described it as relatively safe compared with similar areas. The documented concerns sit in the town centre: anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related disorder and shoplifting around the busy shopping streets. Recorded crime varies by neighbourhood and with how busy the centre is.

### Good to know before you go

- No one can promise safety anywhere. Read "considered safe" as how visitors generally experience the place, not as a guarantee.
- Take the normal precautions you would in any unfamiliar place, especially at night and in busy tourist areas.
- Check your government's official travel advice for the destination before you travel.
- Arrange your own comprehensive travel and health insurance for your stay.

Shops & food

## Shops, food and opening hours in Eastbourne

Eastbourne's big supermarkets keep long hours from Monday to Saturday. Some open at 06:00 and others close at midnight, so a late shop after class is easy. Sundays are shorter. The large stores run reduced hours, so buy what you need on Saturday or early on Sunday. Some smaller convenience shops stay open later if you miss the window. For everything else, the Beacon shopping centre and the independent shops of Little Chelsea are the places to look.

- Pharmacies in the town centre for basics
- Town-centre retailers for everyday errands
- Sovereign Harbour Retail Park has a large supermarket
- Budget supermarkets in town and at the harbour
- Cafés serve casual, affordable meals

## Frequently asked questions about studying in Eastbourne

What kind of town is Eastbourne for a language trip?

A seaside town on England's south coast, with a shingle beach, a flat promenade of about three miles and a Victorian pier. The South Downs National Park adjoins it. The centre is compact and the atmosphere is calm and friendly, so it suits students who want a quiet base and not a big-city pace.

Will I be able to practise English outside the classroom?

Yes. English is the main language in shops, cafés and on the bus. Weekly social meetups also offer English practice for people whose first language is not English.

Where can I find country-wide information such as visas, currency and plugs?

Those facts apply across the whole of England, so they are covered in the country guide and not here.

The South Downs National Park adjoins it. The centre is compact and the atmosphere is calm and friendly, so it suits students who want a quiet base and not a big-city pace."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Will I be able to practise English outside the classroom?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes. Weekly social meetups also offer English practice for people whose first language is not English."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Where can I find country-wide information such as visas, currency and plugs?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Those facts apply across the whole of England, so they are covered in the country guide and not here."}}]}
